A higher power is having a moment. From the growth of Latin Mass and meditation apps, to evangelisms for Al and theocratic wars, the metaphysical heft is piling up. The tilt these days is away from the instant, the atomized, and the literal, and toward those forms familiar from every creed - rituals, symbols, the collective, with its many sensualities. For the irreducible strangeness of the world endures, despite all materialisms and dematerializations, not least the awe we feel when the tiny gets entangled with the very, very vast.

The call of this present is art's to answer: to linger at the threshold, cast one's nets, and invite the contemplation of whatever the hand draws out; a task that, with this issue, Spike has joyously taken up.
